Discover the Elegant World of Tezuma—Japan’s Graceful Traditional Magic
Have you ever witnessed a form of magic so graceful that it leaves you both astonished and mesmerized? Unlike Western magic, which centers on surprising tricks and sleight of hand, Japan’s traditional magic—known as Tezuma—emphasizes not only surprise, but also the aesthetic beauty of the performer’s movements. Would you like to experience this distinctively Japanese art form for yourself? This rare opportunity awaits you in Kagurazaka, Tokyo.

July Tezuma Nights at Ryotei Yukimoto—Tradition in Motion
On July 9 (Wednesday) and July 15 (Tuesday), Ryotei Yukimoto will host performances of Tezuma by master magician Kyoko as part of the 21st “Kagura Goyomi” series. Tezuma, Japan’s traditional magic, which means “hands as swift as lightning,” is a uniquely Japanese tradition of conjuring arts developed over centuries.
Recognized by the Nation: Tezuma as Intangible Cultural Heritage
According to Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs’ Cultural Heritage Database, the origins of Tezuma trace back to sangaku, a form of entertainment introduced from the Asian continent during the Nara period. As sangaku later evolved into Nohgaku, Kabuki, and Bunraku, Tezuma shares its roots with Japan’s most iconic traditional performing arts. From the Meiji era onward, it became customary to differentiate between Western and Japanese magic by calling them yōzuma and wazuma, respectively. In 1997, Wazuma was officially recognized as a Registered Intangible Cultural Property of Japan in need of documentation and preservation by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.

Grace in Motion: The Poetic Simplicity of Traditional Japanese Magic
What sets Tezuma apart is its refined simplicity. Using just the hands, minimal props, and subtle mechanisms, performances are presented as dramatic visual stories, synchronized with music and narration. Unlike the flash of Western magic, Tezuma emphasizes narrative beauty and aesthetics, securing its place as one of Japan’s historically significant traditional arts.
A signature performance in the Tezuma repertoire is “Dance of the Butterflies.” In this piece, handmade butterflies crafted from traditional paper flutter in the air with the magician’s fan. One butterfly becomes two, forming a pair, and by the finale, a thousand butterflies take flight in a cascade of confetti. The true magic lies not only in the visual beauty of the butterflies but in the elegant storytelling that represents the full arc of life.

Join a Night of Living Tradition: Tezuma and Kagurazaka Geisha
Kyoko’s Tezuma seamlessly blends elements of Nihon Buyo (Japanese traditional dance), storytelling, and illusion. Her performance expresses the grace and spirit of Japanese tradition through refined movement and aesthetic form. In addition, geisha from Kagurazaka will be present at the event, further enriching this exquisite cultural experience. Don’t miss this rare convergence of beauty and tradition.
