Reviving the Samurai Banquet — An Exquisite Encounter with Authentic Traditional Culture through Geisha and Hokan Performances in Tokyo

Tokyo’s Authentic Traditional Culture Comes to Life through the Performances of Geisha and Hokan

On May 22, 2025, I had the privilege of attending an exclusive evening at Asakusa View Hotel Annex Rokku in Tokyo, where the timeless elegance of Tokyo’s authentic traditional culture came to life through the refined performances of geisha and hokan (taikomochi). Often referred to as the “male geisha,” the hokan played a pivotal role in Edo-period (1603–1868) banquets, predating the female geisha by over a century and embodying a 400-year-old tradition of wit and sophistication.

The Rare Artistry of Hachiko — Bridging Edo Tradition with Global Pantomime

The star of the evening was Mr. Hachiko, one of only six hokan remaining in Japan today. He is also scheduled to appear at the esteemed ryotei “Yukimoto” in Kagurazaka, a highlight of our premium cultural experience tour, Kagurazaka Refined Wander. His performance transcended language barriers, captivating international guests with a unique blend of traditional artistry and modern pantomime, honed through global performances across 22 cities in nine countries.

A Performance of Geisha Cultural Grace

Sharing the stage with Mr. Hachiko were Ms. Wakana on shamisen and vocals, and dancers Ms. Azuha and Ms. Tamaaki. Each is a distinguished performer, having also appeared in the renowned “Azuma Odori” at the Shinbashi Enbujo Theater, which I had the pleasure of attending just days earlier on May 22. Their performances embodied the elegance of downtown Asakusa and the sophistication of Japan’s classical arts. Notably, the master of the Asakusa geisha is part of the same Hanayagi school as the Kagurazaka geisha, linking these two historically rich districts—Asakusa with its vibrant downtown atmosphere and Kagurazaka with its refined hilltop charm—like sister quarters preserving Japan’s cultural soul.

A Quiet Reflection and an Invitation to the Timeless Banquets of the Samurai

After the performance, I strolled through the quiet, lantern-lit streets around Sensoji Temple. In contrast to the bustling daytime crowds, the nighttime atmosphere exuded a refined stillness, perfect for reflecting on the profound cultural experience of the evening.
